Behind the scenes with Sophie Clare Designs

I’ve always secretly harboured the dream of becoming an interior designer… Designing and decorating are among life’s greatest pleasures and I must confess to spending many a late evening on Pinterest, curating board after board of my ‘Dream Home’ interiors. Yet despite my love for the profession, I quickly learned that to thrive as an Interior Designer takes years of experience and creative flare in the buckets. So, for Sophie Walker to be realising this dream at the age of just 21 speaks volumes about her talent. Thanks to the help of Sarah from Purbeck Living Sophie recently embarked on her own career in interior design, spearheading her eponymous brand Sophie Clare Designs from the historic market town of Wareham. I caught up with Sophie to discover more about her burgeoning career and to find out what she loves about living in Dorset..
Sophie, have you always wanted to start your own business?
Yes, I have always wanted to open my own business and as I grew up the business ideas changed to what the business would be. I came to the decision of my Interior Architecture and design business when I finished my degree as whatever job I ended up doing it had to be using all the many creative techniques that I had learnt from University.
What is your favorite interior design trend at the moment?
At the moment, my favorite interior design trend is Mid-century Modern as I love the combination between old and new styles, to make some strikingly key pieces for the home.
Can you name some of your favorite brands?
Very hard one as there are so many lovely ones to choose from, Oliver Bonas and Anthropology
Where do you look for inspiration for your designs?
To find inspiration for clients as well as the shop I use magazines such as living etc. / Beautiful homes, as well as social media especially Instagram as I flow many interior designers and interior shops.
What’s the first thing you ask a prospective client?
Are you confident in choosing for your home?
What would your dream project entail?
My dream project would entail designing for a whole home to create a design that was reflected in every room keeping a continuous flow throughout, then picking key pieces to have a wow in each area.
What’s your favourite thing about working in Dorset?
My favourite thing about working in Dorset is the location. You are never too far away from anything, whether it’s the beach or larger towns for shopping.
Do you work exclusively with Purbeck Living customers or do you have clients from elsewhere as well?
Majority of my clients are customers from Purbeck living, however I do get some other commissions from outside of Purbeck Living from time to time.
How has working with Sarah helped you to develop your own business?
Working with Sarah has meant that not only my business develops all the time but that it also able to work. Sarah is always there if I need to talk about anything or if I am unsure and epically when learning how to sell yourself and the product.
If I was looking for a gift from Purbeck Living, what would you recommend?
I would highly recommend any item from the Nkuku range, all items are hand made to the highest quality and have such a quality of style that can fit in with any home.
